My 100 Favorite Metal Bands Pt. 4: Alice in Chains

Well, the next band really needs no introduction. Alice in Chains was always my favorite band from the Seattle grunge scene that was hugely popular when I was first getting into metal. AiC is also the most metal group from among them, sounding much more like a hybrid of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin than Nirvana's Beatles-meets-punk oriented sound. The band of course hit it big with the massive song "Man in the Box" and scored even bigger with Dirt. Unfortunately, Layne Staley, whose haunting vocals characterized the band for so many years died of an overdose, but the band eventually reformed and put out the heartbreaking album Black Gives Way to Blue in 2009, a terrific return to form.

FAVORITE ALBUM: DIRT

  1. Their albums still get to me. Nobody else has ever mastered this sound.
