My 100 Favorite Metal Bands Pt. 9: At the Gates

Sweden's At the Gates is one of the leaders in the Gothenburg melodeath scene. Their album Slaughter of the Soul has been mimicked and expanded upon more than almost any other album of the last 20 years. It was responsible for the influx of metalcore and melodic death metal bands. But, as is usually the case, very few did it better than the original. And At the Gates was definitely the original. But we would be remiss if we did not consider their prior material as well, and that has unfortunately been largely forgotten, which is a shame. Melodeath was completely different back before At the Gates's landmark album. They brought a completely new take on death metal. At the Gates has been out of commission for some time now, but their music does not sound any less potent than it did when it was released.
