I am slowly working towards having all of the Mercyful Fate/King Diamond albums. I have added probably five or six in the last year after previously just having the truly legendary albums like Melissa and Abigail. There were a few more in my collection than that, I am just using those two as examples.
I really have no idea what to say about the music on a King Diamond album at this point. It is fucking fantastic, as usual. This album has a lot of great riffs and solos as Andy LaRocque and Pete Blakk form a truly exceptional guitar duo. King's vocals are extremely powerful on this album as well. He seems to have hit his prime by the time this album came around, with full control of his soaring falsetto to go along with his deeper wails. One definitely knows what to expect from the music on a King Diamond album, and thus far, there has never been a real disappointment.
Where I can spend some time is talking about the story on the album. Conspiracy is the sequel story to "Them", which was the story of a fictionalized King and his mentally ill grandmother who communicates with the dead. Along the way, his sister dies mysteriously. This album finds King returning to his grandmother's house in an effort to claim his inheritance, but his mother is plotting against him to claim the house herself. It is a compelling story and I do wonder why no one has decided to make a film about any of the King Diamond or Mercyful Fate concept albums.
King Diamond never disappoints and this is actually one of the better albums from a musical standpoint, which really is saying something. I am continuing on in my efforts to obtain the albums from this metal legend.

Life of Agony: River Runs Red (1993)
Back in the mid 1990's, I picked up the album Ugly, Life of Agony's second release after reading a somewhat favorable review in some music magazine whose name escapes me at the moment. The album became something of a soundtrack for my teen angst years, particularly with songs like "Unstable" (which spoke to me as I was dating a girl with some extreme health issues at the time) and "Damned if I Do". Gradually as I grew up, the album was shoved aside and I did not listen to it for many years. Life of Agony's music on that release seemed more in line with heavy alternative rock than metal. Recently I pulled the album back out and listened to it and was surprised at the fact that I can clearly identify some very real sludge metal-type riffs. The album actually sounds like a (much) lighter version of Crowbar than I remembered.
Unfortunately, the band's third album Soul Searching Sun never did much of anything for me. I picked it up due to my feelings about the previous album and because I actually did like the song "Weeds", which was the album's first single. Every other song was pretty much awful though. The band went too far down the alternative rock road. Even "Weeds" fit in much better with the alternative rock and grunge sound of the era than with anything metal. I have not pulled this one back out.
I kind of forgot about Life of Agony for many years and never really checked in with the band in subsequent years. The band did not release another album until 2005. I was surprised to learn that vocalist Keith Caputo came out as transexual in 2011 and began transitioning to female. She now goes by the name Mina. That was the first I heard from Life of Agony in a long time. And then they sort of exited my consciousness again.
Until just recently. Somehow I heard something about how great the band's first album was. I was never able to find it when I got into the band as it was out of print and these were the days before it was really easy to buy music on the internet. I decided to give it a shot and I was shocked by what I heard. This album is definitely a metal album. At this time, Life of Agony's sound was a concoction of thrash metal, crossover and sludge metal. There are times when the band really does sound like Crowbar. There are others when the band's Brooklyn roots are laid bare and they sound like a combination of Carnivore, early Type O Negative and Biohazard. For instance, any time the band uses gang vocals, the Carnivore/Type O Negative influence is clear. "Method of Groove", with its half-rapped vocals, sounds like Biohazard. In fact, I'm still shocked that Evan Seinfeld did not make a guest appearance on the track.
The teen angst is definitely still the primary lyrical theme on this album. It appears to be something of a concept album, covering a particularly bad week in the life of a teenager. The album is interspersed with tracks that feature the sound of the main character's horrible home life and often features him listening to progressively more depressing phone messages. Prior to the events of the album, his friend died. Then the first story track features his girlfriend leaves him. Then he is fired from his job and told that he will not graduate as he is failing two courses. Finally, his mother and father get into a massive fight and his mother is in the process of leaving when the main character apparently commits suicide. It is pretty brutal.
From this point on, this will be the album I think of when I think of Life of Agony. And this one, despite definitely being a product of its time, should be considered a landmark album in its rather small niche genre.

Malevolent Creation: Stillborn (1993)
Ah, the days when Roadrunner Records actually had legitimate metal bands on their roster. The early '90's saw Roadrunner as one of the leading labels in releasing death metal bands. And Malevolent Creation was one of many. Malevolent Creation was always one of my favorite band names, but I have not really gotten into much of their music. Not really sure why that is.
I decided recently to check out one of the band's earlier releases to see if I could see why they are revered in the death metal scene. This is the band's third release, and it does not have very good reviews on the Metal Archives, so I may have missed the boat here, but if this is a bad early Malevolent Creation album, then I definitely need to hear the good ones.
I love this album. The riffs are rabid and hard-hitting and the vocals have an incredibly aggressive bark that is captivating. There are some damn impressive riffs here that stand out from a lot of the other bands in the Florida death metal scene and the solos absolutely slay. The vocals are not the typical early death metal fare, bearing more resemblance to brutal thrash metal than death metal.
The only real issues with this album are fairly minor. The production is a little murky, but that is not unusual for death metal of this time period. And the album tends to sound a little too much the same at times. There are not a lot of melodic moments, with Malevolent Creation preferring to just bludgeon the listener. But again, these are minor complaints.
This is just the third album I have picked up by Malevolent Creation, and I think I need to check out more. Next stop will be the first two albums I think.

Whiplash: Ticket to Mayhem (1987)
Despite the kind of ridiculous album cover on this one, I have been looking for it for a long time. Whiplash is kind of known for having a few ridiculous album covers. Their debut puts this one to shame. This is one of those hugely underrated thrash metal albums that has been a target of mine for quite some time, just like Wargasm's Why Play Around? and a few others that I have picked up recently.
After an introductory track featuring the sounds of intense warfare, the band immediately kicks off into some high-octane thrash metal on "Walk the Plank". Right off the bat, it is clear that this is a much more aggressive and brutal type of thrash metal band than many of the Bay Area bands of the time period. Whiplash is from New Jersey, but they are also more aggressive than the Garden State's favorite thrash metal band, Overkill.
Despite a somewhat slower, yet still very intense, second track, the album generally continues in the same fast-paced and aggressive style throughout most of the rest of the album, other than a few slower melodic moments. Whiplash write some damn catchy riffs which often sound like a mix of Bay Area and German thrash metal bands. Something of a mix of Exodus and Destruction. Several of the songs are highly infectious and should be thrash classics if this album was better known.
This is a terrific thrash metal album from the 1980's, but it just fell by the wayside in a big scene. That is a shame, but it has gained cult status among old school thrash metal fans.

Cataloguing My Metal Collection Pt. 116
ARTIST: Type O Negative
ORIGIN: New York, NY (United States)
TITLE: World Coming Down
LABEL: Roadrunner Records
YEAR: 1999
GENRE: Gothic/Doom Metal
FAVORITE SONG: "Everyone I Love is Dead"
NOTES: Type O Negative has always been somewhat depressing, but this one really takes the cake. The gloomy group focuses on death and loss throughout the album. The result is an album that, while good, can sometimes be very difficult to listen to. This is not one of my favorite albums by the band, but that is mostly due to the sadness and gloom that permeates the entire thing.

ARTIST: Machine Head
ORIGIN: Oakland, CA (United States)
TITLE: The Burning Red
LABEL: Roadrunner Records
YEAR: 1999
GENRE: Groove Metal
FAVORITE SONG: "The Blood, The Sweat, The Tears"
NOTES: This is definitely closer to a nu-metal album than it is a groove metal album, but that is most likely due to the fact that Machine Head has always been a trend-hopping band. The aggression of this album was definitely a turn-on at this point in my life, but not as much anymore. I did enjoy this album quite a bit at the time I bought it though.

ARTIST: Fear Factory
ORIGIN: Los Angeles, CA (United States)
TITLE: Obsolete
LABEL: Roardrunner Records
YEAR: 1998
GENRE: Groove Metal
FAVORITE SONG: "Edgecrusher"
NOTES: This one was a bit more stripped-down than Fear Factory's prior album. It has taken out more of the death metal elements that were present in the band's sound when they first came out. At this point they were almost solely a groove metal band with some industrial influences. Nevertheless, I still like this album quite a bit. Burton Bell's clean vocals sound terrific mixed with his rougher style. I still come back to this one occasionally.

TITLE: Burn My Eyes
LABEL: Roadrunner Records
YEAR: 1994
GENRE: Groove Metal
FAVORITE SONG: "Davidian"
NOTES: I have picked up three Machine Head albums over the years. This was the first one and is of course the band's debut album. This was one of the albums that helped signal the onslaught of groove metal in 1994, along with Pantera's album. There are some pretty good songs on here, but it became pretty apparent later on that Machine Head was a trend-hopping band.

ARTIST: Sepultura

LABEL: Roadrunner Records
YEAR: 1998
GENRE: Groove Metal
FAVORITE SONG: "Choke"
NOTES: I picked this one up at the same time as the prior Testament album, so it was the night before I took the ACT. I had not heard anything about this album prior to buying it, and if I had I probably would not have gotten it at all. I did not even know Sepultura had a new album out until seeing this on the shelf. This was the first album without Max Cavalera. Derrick Green was the new vocalist and he is not significantly different than Max, but it was still a little tough to get used to him. Musically this album is not much different than Roots.

FAVORITE SONG: "Machines of Hate (Self Bias Resistor)"
NOTES: I will be honest. I have no idea why I still have this. This is a remix album of the breakthrough of Fear Factory. It is much more of a techno remix album and the songs tend to drag on and on. As such, it is not one I pull out very often. And I usually don't enjoy it that much when I do.

ARTIST: Sepultura
ORIGIN: Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais (Brazil)
TITLE: Dead Embryonic Cells
LABEL: Roadrunner Records
YEAR: 1991
GENRE: Thrash Metal
FAVORITE SONG: "Troops of Doom"
NOTES: This was a single featuring the title track, a cover of the Motorhead classic "Orgasmatron", and a re-recorded version of "Troops of Doom" which was initially on the Morbid Visions album. There is not much to say about it other than that. I was a huge Sepultura fan in high school and I was picking up anything and everything by the band that I could find, which included singles, bootlegs, and more.

ORIGIN: Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais (Brazil)
TITLE: Chaos A.D.

YEAR: 1993
GENRE: Groove Metal/Thrash Metal
FAVORITE SONG: "Nomad"
NOTES: I have actually had two versions of this album. The first version was the original with a bonus track featuring demonic laughing. Kind of boring really. The second version featured "Chaos B.C.", a remix of "Refuse/Resist" and some live tracks. My first metal t-shirt featured Sepultura's "Territory". I have no idea what ever happened to that.

FAVORITE SONG: "Body Hammer"
NOTES: I still think this is the best album Fear Factory has ever released. And I do not think that I am alone in this. I first heard Fear Factory on the Mortal Kombat soundtrack as I recall. I liked the song okay, but it was not something that I was incredibly excited about. I heard a few other songs then picked this up. I actually have the digipak reissue with a bunch of bonus tracks.

FAVORITE SONG: "Refuse/Resist"
NOTES: At one point I made a decision that Sepultura was my favorite band and I tried to get as many of their releases as I possibly could. This was my second release by the band and was an EP that was released prior to the Chaos A.D. album. This features the "Refuse/Resist" track as well as a number of covers of bands like Final Conflict, Ratos de Porao, and Motorhead, and some live tracks. It is a pretty decent little EP.

ARTIST: Type O Negative
ORIGIN: New York, NY (United States)
TITLE: October Rust
LABEL: Roadrunner Records
YEAR: 1996
GENRE: Gothic Metal
FAVORITE SONG: "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend"
NOTES: I have always really liked Peter Steele's voice. His deep baritone was especially interesting on the track "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend", which was always kind of a joke song to me. Most of the rest of the album though was softer than the band's previous release. It was never really my favorite album by the band. The production was a little bit too slick as well.

NOTES: The last of the albums I got on the long road trip. I loved this album for several years after getting it. This was my first Sepultura album. Obviously it is not my favorite now, but I do really enjoy the use of tribal drums in the music. This album went a long way towards getting me into more extreme styles of metal.
